Cyprus is one of the oldest wine-producing countries in the world. There are archaeological finds illustrating that wine-making was happening in Cyprus some 6000 years ago. Wall mosaics and ceramics in Paphos show wine being made in Roman times .
Before the 12th century, Commandaria, Cyprus' most famous wine, used to be known as Cyprus Nama and was used during religious rituals for the goddess Aphrodite. During the 12th century the wine was renamed 'Commandaria' after the Gran Commanderie the headquarters of the Knights Templar, close to Limassol which was the headquarters of the Knights Templar.
Today Cyprus wine is as much about tradition as it is about modern technology.
